Replacement Door Lights
This project, completed in October 2012, was a delightful challenge. Two different pairs of double doors in a historic home in New Orleans had one intact and one broken door light. The glass is acid etched, and the panels each had variations due to the hand-process, possible due to different craftsmen. I made a detailed drawing using Adobe Illustrator based on the intact glass, and then made adaptations and emendations based on my client's preferences. We made some personal alterations to the original design, most notably in using my client's initial in the decorative top band on the first door panel. (The broken panel contained the partial letter "J".) I chose to hand-cut the resist for both panels, in order to retain that hand-crafted feel and avoid a too perfect look, which would have contrasted too greatly with the original glass. I used a very fine abrasive in order to replicate the softness of the acid-etched texture as closely as possible.
The replacement glass is slated to be installed in March, so I will post pictures of the door pairs with the new glass installed. Stay tuned!
